“Women for the Lord”: ADM’s vision, mission and values

Over the past year, Anglican Deaconess Ministries (ADM) has embarked on a journey of prayerful reflection to sharpen the articulation of our vision, mission, and values, in alignment with our Constitutional Object and Theological Principles. This work, driven by extensive collaboration among the ADM Board, CEO, and staff, has sought to clarify our identity, purpose, and avenues for engagement, allowing Christians to play active roles in our ministries.

There are many valuable Christian organisations at work, and it can be hard to separate them in our minds. Mary Un, ADM's CEO, emphasises the importance of clarity in this space, sharing, “The question I’m most asked is, who is ADM and what do you do? So, what we wanted to do is make that clear so people can engage with us. With clarity around what we stand for, we are confident that we can impact more women for Jesus.”

The freshly articulated vision, mission, and values are not only a clarification of ADM’s rich heritage but also a strategic blueprint for our future endeavours. By articulating these foundational elements, ADM is equipping our supporters and the broader church with a powerful tool, simplifying pathways to connect with our programs and resources and, God willing, fostering deeper engagement.

ADM’s mission is deeply founded in its historical legacy and the courageous spirit of the deaconesses. “What is the ministry the Lord has put before ADM? It’s rooted in our history and the incredible legacy of the deaconesses,” Mary reflects. This historical grounding ensures that while ADM evolves, it remains true to its original purpose.

But at the same time, the refreshed vision, mission and values also emphasise responsiveness to present needs, a trait that has always been key to ADM’s ministry and innovation.

“The women who came before us were not afraid to try the impossible,” says Mary. “They said “yes” to untested ministries to bring Jesus to a hurting world. They pivoted as needs and opportunities shifted. Loved the unlovable. And laying aside creature comforts, some even put their life and liberty on the line.

“Our ministry will remain agile in responding to needs before us. We look forward to continuing to grow and develop in response to listening to those we seek to serve.”

By sharing a clear vision, mission and values, ADM is paving the way for greater participation and impact. We pray the updated framework will not only help in answering the pivotal question of “who is ADM?”, but also in demonstrating the tangible ways in which individuals may get involved and take part in raising up women for the Lord.
